Ingredients

  • For the Dough:
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast about 2 ¼ teaspoons
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F to 115°F
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Apple Topping:
  • 2 large apples thinly sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Optional Extras:
  • Chopped nuts walnuts or pecans
  • Caramel sauce for drizzling
  • Simple icing glaze

Method

  1. Prepare the Dough:
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add the warm water and olive oil, stirring until a dough forms. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover it and let it rise for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
  3. Prepare the Apple Topping:
  4. While the dough is rising, thinly slice the apples. Toss the slices in a bowl with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice to coat evenly.
  5. Assemble the Focaccia:
  6. Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down and transfer it to a well-oiled baking pan. Flatten it out evenly, then press your fingertips into the dough to create dimples. Arrange the apple slices over the dough, pressing them in slightly.
  7. Bake:
  8. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Sprinkle a bit more sugar over the top of the focaccia. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the edges are golden and the apples are tender.
  9. Cool and Serve:
  10. Let the focaccia cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Optionally, drizzle with caramel sauce or icing glaze for extra sweetness.

Notes

Choosing Apples: Use firm, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture and flavor.
Dough Tips: Adjust the water slightly if your kitchen is particularly humid or dry to ensure the dough consistency is just right.
Flavor Variations: Feel free to add nuts or swap spices to suit your taste.
